Milan reenters Top10 with Verona win
The Rossoneri's win against Hellas Verona allowed them to go up into the elite
Milan was the only new team in the Top10 of this week’s Eurofoot European Club rankings. In a week without UEFA competition, the Rossoneri took advantage of a win against Hellas Verona (2-0), in the Serie A, and replaced Atalanta at the 10th spot, due to the Dea’s defeat (0-1) against Inter Milano, in the San Siro. The ranking table is still led by German team Bayern München, who this week even raised their advantage over second placed Atlético Madrid, as they came from behind and finally beat Borussia Dortmund (4-2) in the Bundesliga, while the Colchoneros only drew at home to Real Madrid (1-1) in La Liga.
Bayern now has 22.396 rating points, 1.333 more than Atlético, and leads the table for the 28th week in a row, since August 24th. FC Barcelona climbed two places, from fifth to third, thanks their two wins this week: 3-0 over Sevilla FC in the Cup semi-finals and 2-0 against Osasuna, in Pamplona, for La Liga. The Catalans now have 20.559 points, only 108 over Real Madrid, who dropped from third to fourth, as they did not manage more than a draw against La Liga leaders and city rivals Atlético. Sevilla FC had a bad week, with a couple of defeats: after the 0-3 at FC Barcelona, which meant they were knocked-out of the Cup, they lost 1-2 at Elche CF in the weekend for La Liga, and are now fifth, with 19.995 points.
Manchester City failed the assault to the Top5, as they were also beaten in the Premier League by city rivals Manchester United (0-2). Pep Guardiola’s team saw their winning streak interrupted after 21 games, and are still sixth, even if only 417 points behind the Andalusians. They were eighth when this win series started, in December. Nothing a good career in the Champions League can’t turn. Manchester United, who grew to 17.775 points after beating City, is a far away seventh, and also counts on the UEFA Europa League bonuses to keep them at bay from the Inter Milano’s approach, as the Serie A leaders are now eight, with 17.479 points. RB Leipzig, who won both games this week (2-0 against VfL Wolfsburg in the German Cup and 3-0 at SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga), is ninth, with 17.024 points, and may benefit from a recovery against now 21st placed Liverpool FC in the Champions League fixture scheduled for next week to climb in the rankings.
The first team that doesn’t come from either of the Top Four leagues is still French Paris Saint-Germain, who is 12th, but may enter the Top10 should they beat FC Barcelona in the second leg of the Champions League tie next Wednesday. Last week they won both games: 1-0 away to Girondins Bordeaux in the Ligue 1 and 3-0 away to Stade Brest in the Cup (even if this last match did not add them anything in rating terms, as it’s still to soon in the competition to have a bonus awarded). FC Porto, who has to fight 15th placed Juventus to remain in European Competition, is the best team not belonging to any of the five Big Leagues: the Dragons dropped one position, to 23rd, even if they beat Gil Vicente (2-0) in the League, as they were knocked out of the Portuguese Cup, by losing 2-3 at home to SC Braga in the semis.
The biggest climb of the week was attained by Turkish side Denizlispor, who went up 48 positions, from 502th to 454th after they beat Yeni Malatyaspor (3-2) in the League. Inside the Top100, the best performance was the one by Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem, who moved up 17 spots, from 106th to 89th after qualifying to the Cup final, with a 2-0 win over VV Venlo, and also beating AZ Alkmaar (2-1) in the Eredivisie. French team Dijon CFO dropped 60 places, from 308th to 368th after losing 3-1 at Stade Brest in the Ligue 1.
