Cup win sends Sevilla FC to Top3
The Andalusians overcame FC Barcelona behind Bayern and Atlético
Sevilla FC reached the Top3 of the Eurofoot club European ranking, after beating FC Barcelona in the first game of the Spanish Cup semi-finals (2-0), last Wednesday. The win gave Julen Lopetegui’s team 221 rating points, enough to make them climb one place, overcoming the Catalans. That was this week’s major change in the table, still led by Bayern München, on 23.043 points. The Germans won the FIFA Club World Championship this week but did not benefit from that result, as non-European teams such as Al Ahly or Tigres are not rated. Bayern leads the pack for the 25th week in a row but saw their advantage to second placed Atlético Madrid reduced in more than 300 points.
The week did not end well for Hans-Dieter Flick’s team, as their return to Germany and the Bundesliga was made with a home draw (3-3) against lowly Arminia Bielefeld. As the result they dropped from last season was also a draw, Bayern did not see their rating change, but the same did not happen to Atlético, who won away to Granada CF (2-1) and now has 21.859 points, just 1.184 behind the leaders. A reasonable margin, bearing in mind that Champions league football (and bonuses) are arriving once again. Sevilla FC is third, on 20.451, as they won both their week’s fixtures: 2-0 against FC Barcelona, on the Cup, and 1-0 at home to SD Huesca, on the League. It’s the first time Sevilla FC is over 20 thousand points and also the first time the are placed amongst the Top 3. FC Barcelona, who beat Deportivo Alavés 5-1 in the League, is fourth, on 20.116 points, 321 ahead of fifth placed Real Madrid, who won at home against Valencia CF 2-0 and is hoping on a good Champions League run to climb on the table.
There were no more changes in the Top10, even if some margins are now different. Manchester City won both of this week’s fixtures, but only the 3-0 victory over Tottenham helped them, as the Cup success against Swansea (3-1) was still part of the Last 16 phase and does not award any bonus points. Pep Guardiola’s squad totals 19.108 points, 687 behind Real Madrid and already a massive 1.357 over city rivals Manchester United, who only drew this week’s Premier League game (1-1) at West Bromwich. Inter Milan got some bonus points out of their Cup semi-final draw against Juventus (0-0), even if they did not reach the decisive game, and as they also beat Lazio (3-1) in the Serie A keep on as the best Italian team in the rankings, on eighth place. Inter has 16.732 points, a little over ninth placed RB Leipzig, who beat FC Augsburg (2-1) and also grew to 16.670. Atalanta, who won both of this week’s games (3-1 against SSC Napoli in the Cup and 1-0 against Cagliari Calcio in the Serie A) closes the Top10, now on 16.303 points.
Immediately after, Milan’s defeat against Spezia (0-2) meant they dropped one place, to 12th, with French team Paris Saint-Germain going the opposite way, to 11th, after they beat OGC Nice (2-1). The French champions are still the best team not coming from the four major leagues. Liverpool FC keeps their way down: the team that led the Eurofoot club rankings from January to July of 2020 lost again, this time against Leicester City (1-3) and dropped another two spots, to 17th. Chelsea and Juventus were the beneficiaries and are now 15th and 16th. Tottenham’s defeat at Manchester City (0-3) also meant they left the Top20, giving way to Borussia Dortmund: the Spurs are now 23rd.
The first team out of the Big Five leagues is still Portuguese champions FC Porto, even if their draws against SC Braga (1-1 in the Cup semi-finals’ first hand) and Boavista (2-2 at home in the League) forced them to drop two places, from 23rd to 25th. Austria’s LASK climbed 16 places, from 115th to the 99th position and attained the biggest promotion amongst the Top 100, whilst the biggest climb at all was reached by Cypriot team APOEL Nicosia, who moved up 59 spots, from the 463rd to the 404th position. On the other way, the biggest fall of the week belonged to Dutch team Willem II, who dropped 66 places, from 379th to 445th.
